In 1980, during the height of "the Troubles" in Northern Ireland, Margot O'Dowd from Strabane was making and selling soft toys on a market stall in an indoor market on the Strand Road in Derry.
Margot always had a love of antiques and jewellery and started to incorporate these items in the market. After a couple of years in the market the opportunity arose to rent a small shop on the Strand Road and The Whatnot was born! Before long, the shop developed a strong following, from the serious antique collectors, to vintage seekers and as Margot got to know her customers the shop began to evolve.
Thirty years on with an ability to adapt and move with the times and thanks to its loyal customer base, The Whatnot continues to thrive.
